Apis Mellifera Caucasica is autochthonous (the original sub-species) to the eastern end of the Black sea coast which is called Macahel area which has untouched and  unique natural flora. These bees are larger & darker than those from the lowland region. The Caucasion Bee is noteworthy for length of its proboscis, being the longest of all the mellifera races.

They are lead-gray in colour, very gentle and swarm infrequently. Therefore they collected much propolis, their spring development is slower than the other races but they build up strong colonies during summer and produce much honey. They tend to rob the weak colonies.

It has the longest proboscis which is 7.2mm. Drones have dark hair and queens are dark and harder to find. They winter well.

Caucasians, freqently called gray Caucasians are the major economic races of bees kapt worldwide.(The Caucasian race of bees that thrives naturally in the area was a genetically unaltered, pure bred race.The queen bee is sought by beekeepers throughout Turkey for its hardworking qualities & high honey production capacity.)
